Living with an Outlander PHEV in the Lehigh Valley: Real Charging Costs on PPL Rates
For most Lehigh Valley commutes, a 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV costs about 9 cents a mile to drive on electricity from PPL, compared with about 16 cents a mile on gas at today's local pump prices.
With gas around $4.34 a gallon in the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton area this month and PPL rates up since June, a lot of local drivers are asking the same question: does plugging in actually save money here? We ran the numbers using real PPL rates, real Outlander PHEV specs, and real Lehigh Valley commutes so you can see exactly what it costs to live with one.
Outlander PHEV Basics: What You're Plugging In
The 2026 Outlander PHEV gets up to 45 miles of EPA-estimated electric range from a 22.7 kWh battery, then switches automatically to its 2.4-liter gas engine for longer trips.
Spec | 2026 Outlander PHEV |
|---|---|
Battery | 22.7 kWh |
Electric-only range (EPA est.) | 45 miles |
Efficiency on electricity | 73 MPGe |
Fuel economy once battery is depleted | 27 mpg combined |
Level 1 charge (standard 120V outlet) | About 16.5 hours |
Level 2 charge (240V) | About 6.5 hours |
DC fast charge (CHAdeMO) | About 29 minutes to 80% |
Drivetrain | Standard Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) |
The key takeaway: if your daily driving is under about 45 miles, you can do most of it without burning any gas at all, and you still have a full tank for weekend trips to the Poconos or the Shore.
The Math: What a Full Charge Costs on PPL
A full charge from empty costs about $4.15 at a typical all-in PPL residential rate of roughly 20 cents per kWh.
Here's how we got there:
- PPL's supply rate. PPL's residential Price to Compare (the generation part of your bill) is about 13.1 cents per kWh through November 30, 2026. It resets every June 1 and December 1.
- Add delivery. Distribution, transmission and other charges push the all-in cost to roughly 20 cents per kWh for most homes. Check the "total cost per kWh" on your own PPL bill for your exact number.
- Energy per mile. At 73 MPGe, the Outlander PHEV uses about 0.46 kWh of electricity from the wall per mile.
- Full charge. 45 miles × 0.46 kWh ≈ 21 kWh, or about $4.15.
Driving mode | Cost per mile | Cost for 45 miles |
|---|---|---|
Outlander PHEV on PPL electricity (~20¢/kWh) | About 9¢ | About $4.15 |
Outlander PHEV on gas (27 mpg at $4.34/gal) | About 16¢ | About $7.25 |
Typical gas-only SUV (28 mpg at $4.34/gal) | About 15.5¢ | About $7.00 |
In short, electric miles cost about 40% less than gas miles at current Lehigh Valley prices. If you shop for a lower-priced supplier on PAPowerSwitch.com, your savings grow.
Real Lehigh Valley Commutes, Real Costs
Most commutes from Emmaus fit inside the Outlander PHEV's 45-mile electric range, so you can skip the gas station on a normal workday.
Round trip from Emmaus (approx.) | Miles | Cost on PPL electricity | Cost on gas (27 mpg) |
|---|---|---|---|
Downtown Allentown | 14 | About $1.30 | About $2.25 |
Bethlehem | 24 | About $2.20 | About $3.85 |
Easton via Route 22 | 44 | About $4.05 | About $7.05 |
Reading via I-78 | 64 | About $7.20 (45 electric + 19 gas) | About $10.30 |
Over a month of 30-mile workday round trips, that works out to roughly $58 in electricity versus about $100 in gas. That's around $500 a year back in your pocket, and more if gas prices climb again this winter.
If you commute to Reading or farther, plug in at work if you can. Even a few hours on a standard outlet adds meaningful range for the trip home.
Charging at Home: Level 1 vs. Level 2
Many Outlander PHEV owners never install anything: the included cable plugs into a regular outlet and refills a typical daily commute overnight.
- Level 1 (standard 120V outlet). About 16.5 hours from empty to full. If you drive 25–30 miles a day and plug in when you get home, you'll usually be full by morning.
- Level 2 (240V charger). About 6.5 hours from empty to full. Worth it if you drive more than 40 miles a day, have two drivers sharing the car, or want a full battery after a quick evening errand. A licensed electrician can tell you whether your panel has room.
Tip for PPL customers: charging overnight is the habit to build. PPL offers a time-of-use option for residential supply, and some competitive suppliers offer plans priced for off-peak use. Compare options on PAPowerSwitch.com before you sign up for anything.
Public Charging Around the Lehigh Valley
Public charging is a bonus, not a requirement: with a gas engine as backup, you never have to plan a trip around a charger.
- Level 2 public chargers at shopping centers, parking garages and some workplaces around Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton work with the Outlander's standard J1772 port. Apps like PlugShare show locations, prices and recent check-ins.
- DC fast charging uses the CHAdeMO connector, which is less common at newer stations. Check that a station has a CHAdeMO plug before you go.
- Cost check. Public charging is often priced higher than home electricity, so it makes the most sense when it's free or when you want to stay in electric mode for a longer day.

Winter in PA: What Happens to Driving Range in a PHEV?
Expect noticeably less electric range on cold January mornings, since every battery works harder in freezing weather and cabin heat draws power.
The good news is a PHEV handles this better than an all-electric vehicle. When the battery runs low, the gas engine takes over, so a cold snap never leaves you stranded. A few habits help you get the most electric miles in winter:
- Precondition while plugged in. Warm the cabin from the Mitsubishi app before you leave so the heat comes from the wall, not the battery.
- Use seat and steering-wheel heaters. They use far less energy than heating the whole cabin.
- Park in a garage when you can. A warmer battery charges and drives more efficiently.
And for snowy Lehigh Valley hills, every Outlander PHEV comes standard with Super All-Wheel Control and dual electric motors, one on each axle.
Will There Be a New Outlander PHEV in 2027?
Yes, a 2027 Outlander PHEV is expected, but early reports suggest it will be mostly a carryover of the heavily updated 2026 model rather than a redesign.
The big changes already arrived for 2026: a larger 22.7 kWh battery, electric range up from 38 to 45 miles, more power, and a refreshed interior and exterior. Early 2027 coverage expects the same plug-in hybrid setup, with prices up modestly depending on trim.
What that means if you're shopping now:
- Buying a 2026 doesn't mean missing out. You get the bigger battery and 45-mile range that's expected to carry into 2027.
- Model-year changeover can mean savings. As 2027 models arrive, remaining 2026 inventory is often the best time to negotiate.
- The charging math in this post applies to both. Same battery, same range, same cost per mile on PPL rates.

Outlander PHEV Charging FAQ
How much does it cost to charge an Outlander PHEV in Pennsylvania? About $4 for a full charge at a typical all-in PPL residential rate of roughly 20 cents per kWh. Your exact cost depends on your supplier and the total rate on your bill.
Do I need a Level 2 charger for an Outlander PHEV? No. The included cable works with a standard 120V outlet and refills a typical daily commute overnight. Level 2 is helpful if you drive more than about 40 miles a day.
Will charging an Outlander PHEV raise my PPL bill a lot? At 30 miles a day on workdays, expect roughly $55–$60 a month in added electricity. That's typically less than you'd spend on gas for the same miles.
Can I drive an Outlander PHEV if I can't charge at home? Yes. It drives like a regular hybrid when the battery is low, rated at 27 mpg combined. You'll save the most, though, if you can plug in regularly.
Does PPL have a special rate for EV charging? PPL offers a time-of-use option for residential supply, and some competitive suppliers have off-peak plans. Compare current offers on PAPowerSwitch.com.
